(Key Stage 3) Years 7, 8 and 9 (aged 11-14 years) This means that when a pupil enters the secondary department of school, he/she is in year 7 and will be learning all subjects in English, based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales Key Stage 3, until the end of Year 9. The pupils have the opportunity to study English, Spanish, German, Maths, Science, Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography , Physical Education, PSHCE (Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education), Art and Music (Year 7 and 8). Pupils in Year 9 split into groups for Art, French or Physical Education. Key Stage 3 focuses on providing the foundation knowledge for IGCSE work in Grade 10. Key Stage 4
Years 10 and 11 (aged
14-16 years) The IGCSEs are international qualifications developed by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). At BIS the IGCSE is typically taken by 16 year old pupils, at the end of Year 11. These are external examinations, which means that the examination papers are sent to school by Cambridge and are then returned to them for marking and grading by an official body. The results are announced in August. IGCSE is a highly respected and internationally recognised qualification. The pupils will all study English Language and Literature, Spanish, German, Maths, Science and PSHCE (Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education). They also have optional subject choices which include French, Art, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Information and Communication Technology and Physical Education, . All Year 10 and 11 pupils participate in Study Skills, a course intended to complement and develop existing skills necessary to improve pupils' examination technique. Key Stage 5
Years 12 and 13 (aged
16-18 years) At BIS pupils usually complete 3 A-levels or more in a range of subjects. These are accredited by Edexcel Examinations Board in the UK. In addition, during the 2 years of A level study pupils may wish to retake AS modules (units) to attain the best possible grade. The A level is a highly respected and internationally recognised qualification, and is used as an entrance examination for many universities.
At BIS students are
also offered half an A level. This is called an AS level, taken
after the first year of study, and can also be used to gain
points to enter many universities.
