New staff at BIC

 Posted: 05-09-2018

Please see details of new staff members joining BIC this September. We hope you share our enthusiasm at these experienced and excellently qualified staffing additions and will enjoy meeting them over the coming weeks. They will work alongside our existing BIC staff, continuing to realise the maximum potential of every individual student within our care. We look forward to continuing to drive forward the reputation of our school to be the international school of choice on the island.

Miss Rosie Leslie - Year 1

A graduate from the University of Aberdeen, Miss Leslie joins BIC from The ENS Karamyshevskaya school, Moscow. A classroom teacher since 2011, her experience within the international sector (previously at The Anderson School, Milan) will enable her to easily assimilate the many nationalities present within our school. Miss Leslie is a gregarious and enthusiastic colleague and we have every reason to believe she will be a great asset to the Primary department and school community. Rosie has spent many years actively involved in the development of young children, undertaking a degree in Early Childhood Studies in Belfast and an HNC in Childcare and Education from Edinburgh. She has worked with children with Special Educational Needs and as an assistant within the Educational department at the Royal Victoria Children’s Hospital, Belfast. Her wide range of skills will be put to great use when nurturing the needs of our Year 1 students.

Mrs. Rachel Alonso-McGregor – Year 4

Mrs. Alonso-McGregor began her teaching career in 2001 and worked at several schools in London, Berkshire and Wiltshire. She went on to spend seven years at The Weald Church of England School Dorking, Surrey combining the duties of a Key Stage 2 teacher with those of Maths Subject Leader across the school. Rachel moved with her family to Mallorca two years ago and has decided now is the ideal time to return to the profession. Her experiences outside the classroom took her on a sabbatical, travelling through Africa, Australia and New Zealand during which time she embarked on an education and building programme in the Usambara mountains, Tanzania. I am confident that her passion for learning and commitment to education will inspire all the students who pass through her classroom.

Mr. Alan Sparks - Head of Mathematics

Mr. Sparks joins the school having served as Second in Department at the Ifracombe Academy, North Devon. Mr. Sparks initial career path led him in to structural engineering and then on to journalism writing for specialised publications. He joined the teaching profession in 2004 and is an enthusiastic and energetic classroom practitioner. He will lead a department that will benefit greatly from his innovative teaching style as well as his wider experience outside the classroom. His teaching philosophy is ‘to be passionate about developing an individual relationship with each pupil that is inspiring, empathetic and engaging, believing this to be the crux of teaching’. Through Alan’s leadership we look forward to seeing the department continue to grow and motivate all students to achieve their very best in this core subject.

Mrs Beth Coutts - Head of Humanities

A former Assistant Headteacher, Mrs. Coutts will lead the newly created Humanities department comprising of History, Geography and Business Studies. Her experience has seen her hold positions at the Ashcroft Academy in Putney, London (an Ofsted Outstanding High Achieving school) and The Overton Grange School in Sutton, as Director of Humanities and Key Stage 4 Raising Achievement Coordinator. Beth will work to ensure that our students develop a real interest in these subjects and make the required progress towards reaching their potential at examination level.

Mr. Alex Fitzpatrick – Director of Sport

Mr. Fitzpatrick, former Assistant Headteacher at The Tong Academy, Leeds, will take on this exciting new role with us at BIC. The shared ambition we have is to develop the department in all areas and drive it forward to be a flagship of BIC. He will develop competitive sports teams within the school, rollout the House system in Secondary and work to deliver an extensive and varied extra-curricular programme. With a career that began in 2005, Alex’s varied roles have always linked back to his first passion; the successful and effective delivery of Physical Education lessons. He has held several leadership posts, including that of Learning Director for P.E. at The Bemrose School, Derbyshire and Faculty Leader at The Temple Moor High School, Leeds. Mr. Fitzpatrick’s experience and commitment to raising standards is exactly what BIC needs and we will watch the progress of this department with great interest over the coming year.

Miss Izabela Zborzynska – P.E. teacher

Miss Zborzynska will work alongside The Director of Sports as a Part time teacher of P.E. A graduate of the Academy of Physical Education in Poznan, Poland and a professional volleyball player, Izabela has experience in teaching a variety of disciplines to all ages. Her vitality and energy will ensure students develop their P.E. skills, helping them to discover and develop in the sport they most enjoy. Miss Zborzynska, a maternal Polish speaker is a keen linguist and able to communicate in English, German, Russian and Spanish. We are confident that Izabela and Alex will make a strong team, working together with innovative ideas and dedication towards maximising the school’s facilities.

Ms Martina Bernie - Teacher of English

Ms. Bernie will join BIC straight from her classroom experiences in the Republic of Ireland. Martina’s qualifications from the University of Dublin as well as her passion for literature will ensure that our English department goes from strength to strength. Martina has very clear ideas as to how to bring out the best in students and share her love of this wonderful subject. She believes that ‘Language is the key to knowledge and through the study of literature, students are given the tool to unlock the world that contains the greatest of all human endeavours’. Ms. Bernie has travelled extensively combining international experience in Indonesia with working in one of the UK’s very well respected independent schools; Tolworth Girls School, Surbiton.

Ms. Maria Luengo – Teacher of Spanish

Ms. Luengo’s teaching career began in 2008 leading her to become Course Leader for Spanish at The Middlesbrough College before moving on to the prestigious Harris Academy Schools in London. A graduate of the University of Malaga, with a PGCE from Leeds University, Miss Luengo is well positioned to make a considerable impact on the learning of our students. Not one to rest on her laurels, Maria is an examiner for the Cambridge International Examinations and Edexcel boards, where she is Team Leader for A Level Spanish. Miss Luengo is a member of the Association of Hispanists in the UK. She is also a member of FILTA, (Film In Language Teaching Association) linked to the University of Manchester. Her collaborations include working with the Spanish Department at the University of Kyoto, Japan, publishing several textbooks for students of Spanish as a foreign language.

Miss Nathalie Houdek – Teacher of German

Miss Houdek will be another exciting addition to our successful Modern Foreign Languages department and will deliver the German curriculum to our students. A graduate from Goethe University, Frankfurt, Miss Houdek joins BIC having already been in Mallorca for a year. Nathalie holds an MA and the German equivalent of the British PGCE. In addition to her academic qualifications, she is a state-licensed swimming coach in Germany and a professional ski instructor, with experience in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Her experience in teaching German, as well as a passion for sports, makes her an excellent addition to the BIC community.
